8.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Mexico City

Mexico City(September 8, 2017): A rare and powerful 8.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico, killing at least five people as seismologists warned of a tsunami of more than three metres.

The epicentre was about 100km (62 miles) south-west of the town of Pijijiapan and at a depth of 35km, the United States Geological Survey said.

According to foreign news agency, a tsunami warning has been issued for Mexico, Guatemala, EL Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras after severe tremor.

The quake was felt in Mexico City, with buildings shaking and people running into the street.
