18th Anniversary of Musharraf Coup Being Observed Today

Web Desk (October 12, 2017): 18th anniversary of famous Musharraf Coup is being observed today. The senate of Pakistan had declared it as Black Day of Pakistan’s history in 2015. 

October 12, 1999,  Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sacked COAS General Pervez Musharraf and appointed ISI chief Gen Ziauddin Butt as new army chief.As a result, the then COAS General Pervez Musharraf was on way to Pakistan from Sri lanka. After his landing,  he toppled Nawaz govt and seized power. He ordered to arrest Nawaz, Shahbaz and other ruling figures immediately.

COAS General Pervez Musharraf declared himself chief executive of Pakistan and democracy was toppled by military on fourth time. Assemblies and Senate were also suspended.Musharaf gave whole country under the control of the army. On the other hand, Musharraf said that Nawaz and Benazir should never be given power again and Judiciary will continue to work independently.

Sharif brothers and many others booked for hijacking Musharraf’s plane terming it terrorism act. Later, Nawaz was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in Musharraf plane hijacking case.

Later, President’s powers under 58-2(b) restored as Musharraf government unveiled constitutional amendment package.General Musharraf issued Provisional Constitution Order (PCO). All judges were asked to take fresh oath under PCO. Eighty-nine of 102 superior court judges took fresh oath.

Gen Musharraf forced President Tarar for resignation and Musharaf taken over as the President of Pakistan to dissolve all the assemblies again.

On May 20, 2000, Supreme Court ordered to General Pervaiz Musharraf to conduct general elections on October 2002 but on 30 April, he became President of Pakistan for next five years after conducting presidential referendum.Musharaf asked PML-Q  to form government on October 2002.

He (Musharraf) announced another emergency in Pakistan on 3 November 2007.

Musharaf resigned from COAS Post on 28 November 2007.

Later, while addressing to the Nation on 18 August 2008, he announced to step down as the President of Pakistan.
