Rafael Nadal Clinches Year-End World No. 1 Ranking

Web Desk(November 2, 2017): Rafael Nadal has become the oldest male player to finish the year as the world number one after guaranteeing he will top the rankings for the fourth time in his decorated career.

It was far from plain sailing for Nadal as he was broken twice in the first set but overcame a slow start to take it.

Chung battled hard in the second set but for every difficult hold Nadal produced a comfortable one of his own to pile the pressure back on.

Eventually it told and the South Korean was broken to love in the eighth game of the second set, Nadal ruthlessly serving out the match 7-5 6-3 and booking his place in the next round after 111 hard-fought minutes.

In doing so, he capitalised on the absence of Federer, resting ahead of the ATP World Tour Finals, by ensuring that the Swiss cannot catch him in the rankings this year, a feat he admitted was all the more remarkable after a lengthy injury break in 2016.
