A man with knife arrested near Buckingham Palace

London (May 24, 2017): A man has been arrested in possession of a knife near Buckingham Palace, as Britain remains on critical  terror alert amid fears Manchester suicide bomber Salman Abedi did not act alone.

The man was detained by police on The Mall just moments before the Queen passed by in a car on her way to an engagement with the Duke of Edinburgh at St Paul’s Cathedral. They are attending a service to mark the centenary of the Order of the British Empire.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said the incident is not believed to be terror-related. However, it comes amid heightened security and as armed soldiers prepare to guard “key locations” across London.

‘No-one was injured in the incident and a knife was recovered. The man has been taken to a central London police station.’

However, armed troops are to be deployed to guard key locations such as the palace, Downing Street, the Palace of Westminster and embassies, Scotland Yard has said.

Soldiers will replace armed police at many sites under Operation Temperer, which is being enacted after security experts warned the Government another terrorist attack could be imminent.

Monday night’s attack at the Manchester Arena after a concert by US pop star Ariana Grande left 22 people dead, including an eight-year-old girl, and dozens injured.
