Boats capsized off Libyan coast, 240 migrants dead

At least 240 migrants are feared drowned off the coast of Libya when their boats capsized. Officials of United Nations High Commission for Refugees said that though the survivors relayed the news to officials on the Italian island of Lampedusa no bodies have yet been found.

According to foreign news agency 29 people survived the first wreck while 120 other people on their boat had gone missing. And in a separate operation, two women were pulled out from the sea swimming at sea told rescuers that another 120 people had died in the wreck they were in.

In both cases, most people on board appeared to have been sub-Saharan Africans. Details of the wrecks have yet to be ascertaining.

Till now this year over 4,000 migrants have died in the Mediterranean Sea alone. They often end up on the shores of European nations like Italy and Greece.
