Next General Elections Will Be Held in 2018: ECP

Islamabad (October 31, 2017): The general election will be conducted in July 2018 as the incumbent government will complete its tenure on June 5, 2018.

In a workshop held by the ECP, officials said that next general elections to be conducted in July and current government’s tenure will end on June 5.

Officials said that to ensure transparency in the elections, watermark papers will be used and ECP will not print more ballot papers.

During the workshop, officials decided that independent Returning Officers will also be appointed for the polling.While highlighting the issues pertaining to fee structure for candidates, ECP revised nomination papers’s fee structure. National Assembly candidates will now have to pay Rs30,000 whereas legislators contesting for Senate and provincial assemblies will have to pay RS20,000.

Officials said in December, a door-to-door verification of voters will take place, whereas the electoral rolls will display the voters’ lists in January 2018.

In January, the objections to the lists will be fixed and from March to April the new lists will be published.Over 100 million voters will cast votes and ECP prepared code of conduct for polling stations and security issues. It is also decided that maximum 1200 voters will be in a polling station.

ECP also  set a limit for candidate to spend for election campaigning. As per details, upper house candidates will be allowed to spend Rs4 million, provincial assemblies’ candidates will be allowed to spend Rs2 million and Senate candidates will be allowed to spend Rs1.5 million.
