Farhatullah Babar Resigns From Parliamentary Committee

Islamabad (November 9, 2017): Pakistan Peoples Party leader and Senator Farhatullah Babar resigned from the parliamentary committee on accountability laws.

Farhatullah had advised the committee that judges and generals should also be held accountable. However, his advice was dismissed by other members of the parliament.

As a result, Babar handed over his resignation from the parliamentary committee.

A copy of the resignation was also shared with all the members of the parliamentary committee during a session on Thursday. On October 20, Babar had resigned from Senate’s Standing Committee on Defence. While speaking to the media, Babar refused to comment on the reason for his resignation.

However, he raised questions over parliamentarians visiting the military headquarters.

Babar referred to an instance from 2003, saying when the GHQ wanted to give a briefing to parliamentarians, the latter were called to the headquarters.

The PPP leader said there is only a distance of 15 kilometres between the Parliament and GHQ, therefore, there should not be an issue for such a briefing to be given in the Parliament.

“Parliamentarians should not go to the GHQ, but instead, the GHQ should come to the Parliament and give a briefing,” Babar said.

Babar was eventually replaced by Farooq H Naek in the defence committee.
