Haris Sohail’s career at a glance

Lahore (May 24, 2017): Umar Akmal’s poor fitness has opened the door for Haris Sohail’s return to the Pakistan squad, in the Champions Trophy.

Haris Sohail was among three batsmen, alongside Umar Amin and Asif Zakir, who were assessed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) following Umar’s failed fitness tests in England. Based on reports submitted by the NCA trainer, PCB’s selection committee, headed by Inzamam-ul-Haq, picked Sohail to join Pakistan’s squad for the tournament that begins on June 1.

The left-hand middle-order batsman, Haris Sohail began playing for Sialkot and Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited as key player. After scoring a century in the final of an Under-19 tournament for Sialkot, he was asked to get on a plane and join the senior side in Karachi the next day for his first-class debut in 2007. He established himself in the 2010-11 season, scoring 654 runs in 12 first-class games including his personal best of 211.

He passed the 1000-run mark the following season and his performances gave him an opportunity to face England in a tour match in the UAE. A few months later, he was called up to the Pakistan side for the Twenty20s in Sri Lanka in 2012.

Sohail made his ODI debut for Pakistan against West Indies in July 2013. He hit a steady 26 before being dismissed by Kemar Roach. He has played a few ODIs since then, but is yet to click on the big stage.

Having such a good domestic record, a recall to the national side was not far away. Sohail made his comeback to the ODI unit in the New Zealand series, he contributed immediately, scoring 85 not out and taking Pakistan home from a difficult situation. Sohail also bowled in the five-match series, picking six wickets.

With Mohammad Hafeez not allowed to bowl due to a suspect action, the Pakistan team management have looked up to Sohail to bring balance to the side. Hence he was selected for the 2015 World Cup.

Sohail has been prolific in List A cricket recently, having scored two fifties and a century in his last five games. Sohail’s left-arm spin might have also helped his cause for selection at a time when Pakistan’s lack of a proper all-rounder is conspicuous.
