According to Indian media reports,  Pakistan had sought the release of the prisoners, since they had completed sentences handed to them by courts in India.

Earlier this month, India had released two Pakistani boys, who had mistakenly crossed the border in Narowal sector.

Tension between the two nuclear-armed arch rivals spiked following last year’s attack on a Indian Army base in Uri in Indian-Held Kashmir.

Ceasefire violations at Line of Control by Indian forces have become a norm as even on Monday two civilians were martyred in Indian firing from across LoC on civilian population.

Indian and Pakistan are currently in a row over the death sentence of Khulbhushan Jadhav. Both are fighting the case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The neighbouring countries use the releases as expressions of goodwill. Last week, India had released two children, Ali Reza, 11, and Babar,10, who accidentally crossed the international border in Punjab along with their uncle Mohammed Shahzad who is still in India’s custody.

According to reports, there are 132 Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails, out of which 57 have already served their jail term. Pakistan says India has to confirm their nationality before it releases them.

The move came after Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif convened a meeting with President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani and Secretary General of United Nations Organisation (UNO), António Guterres, and shook hands with Indian counterpart Narendra Modi under auspices of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Indian premier and Nawaz Sharif shook hands as they greeted each other in Leaders’ Lounge around a year and a half after their last meeting in Lahore.
