Nawaz, Maryam Seek Exemption from Appearance for One Week

Islamabad (November 15, 2017): Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz filed application in the accountability court seeking exemption from personal appearance for one week starting from Nov 20, 2017.

Counsels of Nawaz Sharif submitted an application in the accountability court seeking exemption from personal appearance for a week starting from November 20, 2017.

The counsel stated that Nawaz’s wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was undergoing treatment in UK for throat cancer and his client was to proceed to UK for tending to her.Maryam also submitted application seeking exemption from personal appearance. She stated that in her absence her representative will appear in the court and she would appear the court as and when summoned. She also nominated Jahangir Jadoon as her representative. The judge is yet to give ruling on the applications.

After that the judge allowed Nawaz and Maryam to leave the court.

Earlier Nawaz, who reached Islamabad earlier from Lahore, arrived at the court from Punjab House along with Maryam and Safdar.

During today hearing NAB witness Sidra Mansoor of SECP recorded her statement in the court. She informed the judge that the appeared before the NAB Lahore team on August 18 this year and provided the required documents.

She added that she provided NAB with the 2000-2005 audit report of Hudabiya Paper Mills.

The counsels of Nawaz and his children, Khawaja Harris and Amjad Pervez, objected that the witness has provided photocopies which do not bear official seals and signatures of companies. The counsel completed cross examination of the witness. The second witness of NAB  Jahangir Khan of Inland Revenue Department is recording his statement.Earlier, the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (Retd) Safder appeared before the accountability court hearing hearing corruption cases against them.

A large numbers of PML-N leaders and workers were present outside Judicial Complex to show solidarity with their leaders.

Nawaz and his family are facing three corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in light of the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Panama Papers case. Nawaz and his two sons, Hussain and Hasan, are nominated in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and her husband are only accused in one..NAB’s witnesses Sidra Mansoor of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and Jahangir Khan of Inland Revenue Department appeared before the court.With regards to Nawaz’s sons, the court has separated their trial as they have been a constant no-show in court. They are expected to be declared proclaimed offenders today.

The proceeding is underway.
