PML-N Meeting Underway to Decide Nawaz Successor

Islamabad (July 29, 2017): An informal consultative meeting of top leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is underway at Prime Minister House prior to the parliamentary party meeting  to decide the successor of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The meeting is deliberating over the possible successor of Nawaz Sharif.

Today, PML-N’s parliamentary party meeting is scheduled to be held at 4:00 pm today. But before the meeting, an informal consultative meeting is underway at PM House.The meeting is being attended by top aides of Nawaz Sharif including Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Khwaja Saad Rafique, Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Birjees Tahir, Asif Kirmani, Ahsan Ibqal, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Shahid Khaqab Abbasi and others.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is also attending the consultative meeting.

Sources said that the decision of the successor of Nawaz Sharif would be made in the close and informal huddle and it would be announced in the parliamentary party meeting which has been convened today at 4:00 pm.The parliamentary party meeting will give approval to the nominee who will be next Prime Minister of the country.

They said that the informal meeting will also discuss candidates for PM, party’s new president, and members of the Cabinet.It is to be mentioned here that following his ouster, Sharif had met with senior party leaders yesterday and recommended his brother, CM Punjab Shehbaz Sharif as his replacement as Pakistan’s PM.

A name has not been announced for the interim prime minister, who will fill the 45-day vacuum until Shehbaz Sharif is elected to a National Assembly seat.

According to reports, two names have surfaced for the interim prime minister — Khawaja Asif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Sharif stepped down as the prime minister of Pakistan on Friday after being disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court.
