Newly Elected PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Sworn-in

Islamabad (August 1, 2017): The newly appointed Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has taken oath in a simple ceremony held in President House in Islamabad. 

ٓAccording to the details, Prime minister-elect Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday took oath as the eighteenth prime minister of the country at the President House Islamabad.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Abbasi, after he swept the election with a majority vote. He secured 221 of 339 votes.

Abbasi took oath of his office at a solemn ceremony, which had armed forces chiefs, governors, members of the parliament and prominent political and social figures in presence.

The ruling PML-N head Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar did not attend the ceremony.

Earlier , Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was elected as an Interim Prime Minister by securing 221 votes out of 339.PPP’s candidate Naveed Qamar secured 47, PTI and PML-Q’s joint candidate Sheikh Rasheed 33 and Sahibzada Tariqullah got 4 votes.

“I want to thank the supporters and our partners in the coalition who voted for us,” said the new prime minister of Pakistan in his first address to parliament.

“Four days ago, the Supreme Court verdict was completely embraced us but not the public. The prime minister left the PM House after the verdict. There were no rifts in the party following the verdict,” said Abbasi.

He added that democracy was not derailed and is now “back on track”.Abbasi praised the leadership and principles of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and criticised the opposition for accusing Nawaz of corruption.

Following the Supreme Court’s disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N had agreed upon Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the former petroleum minister, as its candidate for interim prime minister.
