Over 0.5 Million Rohingya Enter Bangladesh: UN

Bangladesh (September 28, 2017): The number of Rohingya refugees who have fled to Bangladesh since violence broke out in Myanmar´s Rakhine state on August 25 has exceeded half a million, the United Nations said on Thursday.

The new figure of 501,800 — up from around 480,000 — was due mainly to the counting of refugees not previously included in the tally rather than a dramatic increase in arrivals.

Meanwhile, a boat carrying Rohingya fleeing violence in Myanmar capsized in rough seas off Bangladesh, due to which At least 10 children and four women were killed.

According to witnesses and survivors, the boat overturned just yards from the coast after apparently hitting a submerged object and was later washed ashore in two parts.

Around 120 Rohingya, many of them children, have drowned trying to reach Bangladesh in small fishing boats that coastguards say are woefully inadequate for the rough seas.

The United Nations estimates that over 500000 have fled Myanmar’s violence-wracked Rakhine state in recent weeks after attacks by Rohingya militants on security posts prompted a military crackdown.
