Pakistani-American Doctor bags Nato preventive scientific achievement award

Dr. Rashid A Chotani, a graduate of Aga Khan University Medical College and now working in the United States, has won the Scientific Achievement Award 2016 from the NATO Science and Technology Organization for his performance in research on medical countermeasures against biological agents.

Dr. Chotani was part of the Research Task Group (RTG) who worked on ‘Medical Countermeasures against Biological Agents.’ They were presented with the award by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)’s Science and Technology Organization (STO).

The NATO STO is the largest NATO organization for defense science and technology. The Scientific Achievement Award from NATO recognizes outstanding contributions made to NATO STO sponsored activities worldwide.

Dr. Chotani enjoys a good reputation in the medicine community. He is renowned for identification, surveillance and diagnosis of human and zoonotic infectious diseases.

He reached the pinnacle of his academic career at John Hopkins University, where he established and directed the Global Infectious Disease Surveillance and Alert System (GIDSAS).

Due to his reputation, Dr. Chotani was selected to be member of the Human Factor and Medicine Panel (HFM). The goal of the panel was to optimize the safety, well-being, and performance of individuals working in operational environments across NATO-allied countries.

The key research contribution was provided by Dr. Chotani panel’s threat and risk assessment report of biological agents used against NATO forces. The report also detailed evaluations of cutting-edge technologies that are used to improve medical countermeasures.
