Panama JIT records ICIJ journalist Umer Cheema’s statement

Islamabad (May 18, 2017): Joint Investigation Team, formed to investigate Sharif family off shore companies, has started recording statements of concerning persons as the statement of International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) reporter Umer cheema was recorded in today’s  proceeding.

The six-member committee has asked the various questions from Cheema regarding off shore companies, persons and accounts. JIT has also reviewed the financial documents of Prime Minister Nawaz Sahrif and other members of his family and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar sent by election commission on the demand of JIT.

Team also analysis the documents regarding Hudaibia Papers Mill as to take comprehensive analysis JIT will also take assistance from a foreign audit firm. Following the analysis a questionnaire will be sent to accused.

Sources confirmed that committee will also summoned some other persons to record their statements in this connection.

On April 20 the five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court announcing the judgment over the Panamagate case ordered formation of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the allegations leveled in the Panamagate case by PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami, Shaikh Rasheed, and others.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hassan and Hussain as well as Ishaq Dar and Capt (r) Safdar are being ordered to appear before the JIT.

The judgment was written by Justice Ijaz Afzal and it was read by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

The 540-page judgment was a 3-2 verdict- two of the five judges- Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Gulzar Ahmad- favored denotification of Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister.
