The seat fell vacant when Nawaz was disqualified as a result of the Supreme Court verdict in the Panama Papers case.

During the course of the PML-N’s political consultations in Murree last week, sources had claimed that Shehbaz Sharif could be appointed the party president.

Earlier, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued a notice to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and asked to elect a new president of the party following the disqualification of incumbent president Nawaz Sharif by Supreme Court of Pakistan.

According to sources, the ECP informed the party that according to the Political Parties Order 2002, a disqualified MNA cannot hold any position in the party.

It said the party needs to appoint a new president and then inform the ECP of the same.
