US Adds Hizbul Mujahideen to Terrorism Blacklist

Washington (August 16, 2017):  The Trump administration has added a Kashmiri militant group Hizbul Mujahideen,  fighting to end Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region, to several terrorism blacklists.

The designation blocks any assets the group may have in U.S. jurisdictions and bars Americans from doing business with it.

The State and Treasury departments said Wednesday they had designated Hizbul Mujahideen a foreign terrorist organization and also added it to list of specially designated global terrorist groups.

Hizbul Mujahideen is the largest of Kashmir’s militant groups. Its founder, Syed Salahuddin, was designated a terrorist by the U.S. in June, ahead of a visit to Washington by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Salahuddin has vowed to continue fighting until India relinquishes control of Kashmir.

On June 27, United States Department of State had declared Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Syed Salahuddin a global terrorist, hours before Donald Trump-Modi meeting at the White House.

US state department said that the announcement ahead of Trump-Modi meeting was a co-incident.

Trump also drafted First Lady Melania Trump to join him in welcoming the Indian Prime Minister. The First Lady is also slated to join them for dinner and take part in the departure ceremony, making it three appearances with the visiting dignitary – a clearly personal gesture from Trump towards a leader who is single and unaccompanied.
