Water talks: Indian delegation reaches Lahore

LAHORE: An Indian delegation reached Lahore through the Wagah border today to take part in the Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) meeting.

The two-day meeting will be held in Islamabad from tomorrow.

The 10-member delegation is being headed by India’s Indus Water Commissioner PK Saxena.

It is to be mentioned here that the PIC meeting was earlier scheduled to be held in Lahore, however later the venue of the meeting was changed.

Experts say India has violated the Indus Water Treaty by constructing five large dams. The country has plans to construct a total of 262 dams by 2025 on Pakistan and Kashmir’s water sources.

It is to be mentioned here that the 57-year old pact assigned River Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej to India whereas River Chenab, Jehlum, and Sindh were allocated to Pakistan.

As per the agreement, both countries are liable to hold deliberations each year in order to ensure compliance with the treaty and resolve any disputes
