Woman holds her broken heart in hands

A woman held her broken heart in her hands after it was removed in a life-saving transplant.

Lisa Salberg, 48, was diagnosed with a dangerous form of heart disease at just 12 years old and has undergone multiple operations to keep it beating.
Last year, her heart began to fail and she was left with no choice but to have a heart transplant.

But before going under the knife, Lisa had one usual request – she asked doctors to keep her heart so she could hold it.

‘I was struck by the density and the weight to it. It was really, really heavy,’ she said.

Lisa, from New Jersey, suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an inherited condition where the muscle wall of the heart becomes thickened, making it harder to pump blood.

Her sister died from the disease and at least five other family members have been diagnosed.

In a bid to raise funds for research, Lisa started the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association.

Talking about her damaged heart, she said: ‘We were friends for 48 years.

‘It [was] with me every moment of the day of my life. It was nice to be able to say goodbye.

‘I have an entire life ahead of me to find ways to improve people’s health, and I’m doubling down. You ain’t seen nothing yet.’
