12-year drought ends, Pakistan hosts Int’l Tennis tournament

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is hosting international tennis tournament at Sports Complex here to end the ten-year drought with Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and fellow countrymen Aqeel Khan beating Iranians Anosha Shah Gholi and Shaheen Khalideen respectively in the first singles events of Davis Cup tie.

Pakistan, thus, has won the singles event by 2-0.

In the first singles of Davis Cup Tie Asia Asiana Zone 2 Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan beat Iranian Shaheen Khalideen in straight sets. Aqeel won the fisrt set after a fierce fight from his Iranian rival by 7-6. Aqeel easily won the second set by 6-4 and also won the third and the last set.

In the second single event Aisamul Haq beat Anosha Shahgholi easily and by 6-1, 6-2, and 6-2.

Pakistan’s Abid Ali Akbar and Muhammad Abid will face Albaroze Akhwan and Hamid Raza respectively in David Cup doubles round tomorrow. Aqeel Khan will face Anosha Shahgholi in reverse singles on Sunday while Aisam will be facing Shaheen Kahlideen.
