12th death anniversary of legendary folk singer Reshma observed today

LAHORE: Today marks the 12th death anniversary of Pakistan’s legendary folk singer Reshma, fondly remembered as the “Nightingale of the Desert.”

Born around 1947 in Bikaner, Rajasthan (India), into a Banjara family, Reshma’s remarkable musical journey began when she was discovered performing at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Her debut recording, “Laal Meri,” aired on Radio Pakistan and quickly gained immense popularity.

Over the years, Reshma emerged as one of Pakistan’s most iconic folk artists, captivating audiences with her profound voice on television, radio, and during live performances both locally and internationally. Her contributions extended to lending her voice for Pakistani and Indian films, earning her widespread admiration across borders.

In acknowledgment of her contributions to music, Reshma received numerous accolades, including the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and the Legends of Pakistan Award. She passed away in 2013 after a prolonged battle with throat cancer, spending her final days in a coma.
