20 dead in Punjab floods as authorities step up relief efforts

Lahore: At least 20 people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents in last 24 hours, according to the director general of Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The highest number of fatalities has been reported from Gujranwala, DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kahthiya said.

He however, clarified that no incidents have occurred involving people stranded during evacuations.

The DG PDMA said that families of those who died in the floods will receive financial assistance of Rs1 million each.

He added that, on the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s instructions, measures are also being taken to safeguard livestock.

So far, 317,400 animals have been shifted to safe locations, while arrangements for fodder are also being made.

Helicopters and boats have been deployed where necessary to move residents to safer areas, he added.
