Climbing Mount Everest becomes even tougher

Kathmandu(May 22, 2017): A rocky outcrop on Mount Everest known as Hillary Step has collapsed, mountaineers said on Sunday, making the climb even tougher for those who dare to attempt reaching the summit.

The rocky outcrop stood on the mountain’s southeast ridge, and was the last major challenge before the summit. Mountaineers believe the almost-vertical 12m rocky outcrop may have fallen during Nepal’s 2015 earthquake.

“Not sure what’s going to happen when the snow ridge doesn’t form because there’s some huge blocks randomly perched hither and thither which will be quite tricky to negotiate,” added Mr Mosedale.

Roland Yearwood, 50, from Georgiana, Alabama, died on the mountain, but other details were not immediately known, said Murari Sharma of the Everest Parivar Expedition agency, based in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.
