5.9 magnitude tremor hits Islamabad and surrounding regions

ISLAMABAD: Various regions in Pakistan felt the tremors of a powerful earthquake early Wednesday morning.

In the early hours of Wednesday, a seismic event measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad and various cities across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir.

The tremors were felt widely, with reports indicating significant shaking in cities such as Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, and Peshawar, among others.

Panic ensued as residents rushed out of their homes, many reciting verses from the Holy Quran in response to the quake. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that there have been no casualties or significant property damage related to the event.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake’s epicenter was identified in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan, situated at a depth of 121 kilometers.

This seismic event is part of a series of recent tremors that have affected the region. Earlier in April, a 4.7-magnitude quake rattled Mingora city and its suburbs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Just days before that, on April 13, another quake of 4.1 magnitude had similarly impacted Mingora and surrounding areas.

On April 12, a stronger quake measuring 5.5 struck various cities across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting alarms across multiple urban centers.
