WEB DESK: Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the wife of former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, has sparked controversy within the Congress by suggesting that substantial monetary exchanges occur within the party to secure the position of chief minister. She also mentioned that her husband would only re-enter active politics if offered the chief minister’s role.
Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on issues such as the state’s “deteriorating” law and order situation, Navjot Kaur expressed her observations and concerns.
She stated that they lack the financial resources to contribute to any political dealings but are confident in their ability to transform Punjab into a “golden state.” Responding to questions, she reiterated that her husband has deep loyalty to the Congress and is closely connected with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
However, she highlighted internal strife within the party, saying that with multiple contenders for the role of chief minister and persistent infighting, it seems unlikely her husband would be promoted within the current environment.
She suggested that certain leaders within the Congress are undermining the party’s chances of success. Whether the party’s leadership will recognize this remains uncertain.
When asked if Navjot Singh Sidhu would return to politics if declared the party’s chief ministerial candidate, she confirmed he would. Otherwise, she remarked, he is content with his current pursuits and financial stability.
She further stated that while they are vocal about Punjab’s welfare, they lack a sum such as Rs 500 crore to obtain the chief ministerial position.
When questioned if money had been directly demanded from them, she clarified it hadn’t been but alleged that “whoever brings a suitcase with Rs 500 crore” is able to secure the CM’s chair.
