7.2 magnitude earthquake jolts Philippines

MANILA: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake jolted Sarangani town in Davao Occidental and other areas in Mindanao, an island in Philippines  on Saturday morning.

The earthquake struck an area off Sarangani at around 4:23 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of  57 km. Multiple aftershocks have followed the quake, the strongest recorded by Phivolcs was a magnitude-4.1 tremor at 4:54 a.m.

At around 7 a.m., Phivolcs lifted the tsunami warning it had earlier issued, warning residents to stay away from the coast fronting Celebes Sea in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Davao Oriental, and Sultan Kudarat.

“Tsunami threat is over and only a 10 cm wave was produced,” Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said in a text message.
