ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to press freedom and freedom of expression.
In his statement, Acting President Gillani emphasized that a free press is essential for the stability of democracy and transparency in Pakistan. He condemned violence against journalists, asserting that such acts undermine democratic values. Highlighting the constitutional guarantees for freedom of expression and access to information, he noted the steps taken to safeguard journalists, including the passage of the Journalists and Media Workers Protection Act 2021 and the introduction of health insurance for media personnel. Gillani called for a comprehensive strategy to enhance the protection of journalists.
Turning to the situation in Palestine, Gillani expressed grave concern over the rising casualties among journalists due to Israeli military actions, particularly in Gaza, where over 130 journalists have reportedly been killed. He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for these violations against media professionals.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, asserting that the protection of journalists is crucial for ensuring press freedom. He acknowledged the risks that journalists face globally, particularly in conflict zones, where many have been subjected to violence, threats, and even murder while fulfilling their duty to inform the public. He lamented that despite international conventions, numerous journalists in Gaza have been deliberately targeted to obstruct the truth.
The Prime Minister praised the sacrifices made by Pakistani journalists in the struggle for democracy and the rule of law. He affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the safety of journalists and ensuring accountability for those who perpetrate crimes against them. He emphasized that the protection of journalists will remain a priority for the current administration
