MQM-H Leader Afaq Ahmed detained on Judicial Remand

KARACHI: Chairman of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM) Haqiqi, Afaq Ahmed, was sent to jail by an anti-terrorism court, which denied police remand in two violent cases related to vehicle burning in the jurisdictions of the Karachi East Zone’s Landhi and Awami Colony police stations.

According to Superintendent Police (SP) Investigation Korangi Qais Khan, a politician’s instructions led to the deliberate vandalism and fire in multiple vehicles in the Landhi area.

According to the plaintiff, the accused were saying during the incident that they set the vehicle on the orders of their leader Afaq Ahmed as Afaq Ahmed had forbidden to enter the heavy traffic city.

According to the plaintiff, the reason for his car being burned was the threatening video of Afaq Ahmed, the leader of MQM (Haqiqi), going viral on social media. In this video, he addressed his associates with threats, stating that heavy traffic would not be allowed to enter the city of Karachi from Tuesday, and if it did, there would be consequences.

During the hearing, the judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court addressed the police prosecutor and inquired, “Tell me, why does the police need a remand? What investigation needs to be conducted with Afaq Ahmed?”

The court remarked that the matter is suspicious, what is needed to have physical remand, I am sending the accused to jail.

Heavy traffic in Karachi has caused a lot of deaths for citizens in accidents on dumpers.

The local government imposed a ban on heavy traffic, especially dumpers, entering the city during daytime hours, which led to protests by transporters.

Later, the lawyers of MQM Haqiqi filed a bail application for Afaq Ahmed in the Anti-Terrorism Court, after which the court issued notices to the parties for February 14.
