WEB DESK: Stress caused by work or other factors in the office affects not only you but also your spouse’s sleep. This has been revealed in a new medical study.
The research conducted by the University of East Anglia found that most people experience stress during their office work, and as a result, their sleep is affected. However, for the first time, the study discovered that these sleep issues are contagious, meaning not only the person affected but also their spouse’s sleep is significantly impacted.
In the first phase of the study, 147 individuals who were employed were included, and their daily routines were monitored over five days. In the second phase, 139 couples were included, and their routines were observed over two months.
The results showed that in both phases, participants reported increased stress due to various reasons in the office, which led to insomnia or poor sleep.
The research demonstrated that sleep is more affected by harsh comments from colleagues at the office. This negative experience likely stays in the person’s mind, making it difficult to sleep or causing them to wake up frequently during the night.
The study also found that if one person’s sleep is disturbed due to stress, their spouse also experiences insomnia or poor sleep. Researchers explained that the results prove that office stress does not remain confined to the office or to you alone, but it also impacts your spouse. They further mentioned that the findings will help in formulating strategies that can assist affected couples in preventing sleep problems
