WEB DESK: Fast bowler Hassan Ali has come out in support of the beleaguered former captain of Pakistan, Babar Azam, amidst growing scrutiny surrounding the star batter’s recent form.
Speaking at a press conference following a match in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Monday, Hassan praised Babar as Pakistan’s “best player” and dismissed the criticism directed at him, while acknowledging the challenges the batter has been facing.
Hassan’s comments were made in response to a journalist referencing his earlier remark that labeled Babar as a “King,” stating, “King kar lega,” which translates to “The King will deliver.” He emphasized that while they have elevated Babar to a position of prominence, the same scrutiny can bring him down during tougher times.
“We made Babar the king, but we are also capable of bringing him down,” Hassan said. He added, “If my saying ‘the king will deliver’ has offended anyone, I sincerely apologize. However, my stance remains unchanged: Babar is our best player, and he will make a comeback.”
Addressing the performance of his team, the Karachi Kings, Hassan acknowledged that their batting collapse was a pivotal factor in their loss to Lahore Qalandars.
He noted, “We lost early wickets, failed to build partnerships, and the pressure mounted on us,” asserting that they would need to analyze their inconsistencies moving forward.
The 2017 Champions Trophy hero also touched on the broader subject of player criticism, condemning personal attacks while accepting constructive feedback. “It’s acceptable to critique for growth, but when families are targeted, it affects everyone involved,” he remarked, referencing disturbing behavior from crowds during Pakistan’s recent tour of New Zealand. “As public figures, we understand the scrutiny comes with the territory, and it is our responsibility to respond through our performances.”
Hassan, who last represented Pakistan in May 2024, expressed his desire to return to the national team, stating, “I’m still young and confident in my abilities. My performances here will ultimately determine my future in international cricket.”
