ISLAMABAD: On Monday, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) submitted a formal motion and resolution in the Senate opposing the Pakistani government’s decision to nominate U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
The resolution, presented by JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza, urges the government to revoke its nomination in light of recent U.S. military actions against Iran. It asserts that these strikes, reportedly ordered by President Trump, resulted in multiple Iranian casualties and were carried out in violation of international law, human rights standards, and Iran’s sovereignty.
The document criticizes the federal government for making the nomination without consulting the Parliament or considering public opinion. It calls for an urgent Senate debate on the issue in the national interest.Notably, President Trump announced that the U.S. military targeted three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo. Pakistan has publicly condemned these strikes, with the Foreign Office issuing a statement expressing grave concern over the escalation of tensions in the region.
Pakistan’s official stance emphasizes that the attacks breach international norms and affirms Iran’s right to self-defense under the UN Charter. The statement highlights that the ongoing violence and escalation threaten regional stability and urges all parties to respect civilian lives and property. It underscores the importance of adhering to international law to prevent further conflict and calls for an immediate de-escalation to avert severe regional and global repercussions
