ISLAMABAD: Government has announced plans to roll out 4G network services in remote and underserved areas, aiming to narrow the digital gap across the nation.
According to official sources, the Universal Service Fund (USF) Board has approved seven key projects focused on expanding broadband and fiber optic networks throughout the country. The initiative was approved under the leadership of IT Secretary and USF Chairman Zarar Khan, with a combined investment of Rs7.49 billion.
The projects comprise five broadband expansion schemes and two fiber optic deployment initiatives, totaling 940 kilometers of fiber optic cable to connect 347 villages and 113 towns or union councils across 12 districts.
USF reports indicate that these efforts will provide fiber connectivity to approximately 2.8 million residents and broadband access to nearly 965,000 individuals in rural areas. Zarar Khan emphasized that with support from Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima, the accelerated deployment will empower thousands of youth and women from isolated regions to engage in freelancing and digital entrepreneurship.To date, USF has facilitated broadband access for over 37 million Pakistanis nationwide.
Further details from USF CEO Mudassar Naveed reveal that Rs3.27 billion will be allocated to install 415 km of fiber optic cables in Sanghar, while Rs2.38 billion will finance 525 km of fiber infrastructure around Jhang. This initiative also aims to bring 4G connectivity to rural communities in districts such as Attock, Khushab, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Chiniot, Badin, and Abbottabad.
