Flash floods alert issued across Pakistan amid severe rainfall forecast

Islamabad: The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide alert for severe rainfall and potential flooding across Pakistan, effective until Thursday, July 10, 2025.

The alert highlights a significant risk of flooding in rivers and streams throughout Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the NDMA, increased water flow is anticipated in major rivers including the Kabul, Indus, Chenab, Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, and Hunza, as well as various other streams. Specifically, a low-level flood is expected at Marala and Qadirabad points on the Chenab River.

Heavy rainfall is also predicted to cause localized flooding in northeastern Punjab, southern Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir.

Streams originating from the Pir Panjal range in northeastern Punjab, the Jhelum River and its tributaries in Azad Kashmir, and the Hunza River and other streams in Gilgit-Baltistan are all at risk of sudden water level rises and overflow.

In southern Balochistan, streams from the Kirthar Range, particularly in districts like Awaran, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Qila Saifullah, and Musakhel, may experience flood conditions.

The NDMA has advised the general public to avoid crossing fast-flowing streams, bridges, and submerged roads.

Residents in low-lying areas are urged to make early arrangements to move valuables and livestock to safer locations and to prepare an emergency kit with a three to five-day supply of food, water, and medicines.

Local administrations and relevant departments have been instructed to keep necessary machinery and pumps ready for immediate drainage operations.

The public in flood-prone areas is advised to stay updated with official warnings via television and mobile alerts, and to utilize the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for timely information and safety guidance.

The NDMA is closely coordinating with all relevant institutions to ensure proactive measures are in place to handle any potential emergency.
