KARACHI: Hot and sunny conditions continued in Karachi on Saturday, though the return of partial sea breeze has brought some relief. The Pakistan Meteorological
Department (PMD) reports that normal sea winds are expected to resume by Sunday, likely improving the city’s weather with chances of light drizzle during early morning and late-night hours.
The next monsoon system is forecast to impact Karachi from July 15 to 17, bringing light rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms.
Other parts of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Hyderabad, are also likely to receive moderate showers and thunderstorms during this period, with intermittent breaks.
According to the Met Office, moist monsoon currents have started entering the country and are expected to strengthen from July 13. Additionally, a fresh westerly wave is expected to reach the region on the evening of the same day.
As a result of these weather patterns, rain along with wind and thunderstorms—some heavy to very heavy—are anticipated across northeastern and southern Balochistan from July 13 to 16.
The PMD has issued alerts for possible flash flooding in streams, hill torrents, and local drainage systems in several regions, including Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, parts of northeastern Punjab, Balochistan, and Kashmir, particularly on July 13 and 14.
Heavy downpours may also trigger landslides in mountainous areas such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Urban flooding remains a concern in low-lying zones of major cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar due to the anticipated intense rainfall.
