PTI members steps back from senate standing committees

ISLAMABAD: After resignation from national assembly standing committees, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members resigned from senate standing committees following the instruction of PTI founder Imran Khan.

Senators Ali Zafar, Azam Swati, Dost Muhammad, Zeeshan Khanzada, Mirza Afridi, and Mohsin Aziz have resigned from their respective Senate standing committees.Senator Azam Swati submitted his resignation from five committees to Parliamentary Leader Ali Zafar, who will forward them to the Senate Chairman. He stated the resignations were made on the party leader’s directives, adding that the existing parliamentary system has lost its credibility and standing committees are now ineffective in upholding the rule of law and constitution.

According to the resignation letter sent by Senator Zeeshan Khanzada to the Senate Chairman, he resigned from five committees in protest, including as Chairman of the Overseas Pakistanis Committee, and as member of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Finance and Revenue, Commerce, and Privatization Committees.

PTI Senator Dost Muhammad also submitted resignations from the Committees on Government Assurances, Human Rights, Food Security, Poverty Alleviation, and Railways.

Similarly, PTI-backed Senator Mirza Muhammad Afridi resigned from the Committees on Commerce, Industries and Production, Education, Energy, and Inter-Provincial Coordination, citing Imran Khan’s instructions. Earlier, Senator Mohsin Aziz had already stepped down from all committees.

It is noteworthy that, on Imran Khan’s directives, Public Accounts Committee Chairman Junaid Akbar and 51 PTI members of the National Assembly had already tendered their resignations to the NA Speaker. Sources say National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has not yet taken action on these resignations, while the government has requested the Speaker not to accept the resignations of Sunni Ittehad Council members.
