Luxembourg moves towards recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state

WEB DESK: Luxembourg has declared its intention to officially recognize Palestine as an independent state. Reports from international news sources indicate that Luxembourg intends to back the recognition during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly this month.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel highlighted that the situation in Gaza has worsened considerably in recent months, and a renewed push for a two-state solution is gaining international support. He also confirmed that Luxembourg will be among the nations advocating for Palestine’s recognition at the General Assembly.

Nonetheless, Bettel and Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn informed parliamentary officials that a final decision will be made following discussions with France, Belgium, and other allied nations.

It is important to note that Luxembourg is not the first to consider recognizing Palestine as a state. Previously, countries including France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Belgium have already taken steps toward recognizing Palestine, with formal declarations anticipated during this month’s UN General Assembly proceedings.
