NA passes resolution condemning PTI founder’s Threats to Senior Journalist

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Monday condemning alleged threats made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan towards senior journalist Ejaz Ahmed while in Adiala Jail.

The resolution highlighted that Imran Khan has initiated a campaign of intimidation and harassment against prominent journalists, urging authorities to take appropriate action. It also stressed the importance of safeguarding journalists’ rights both in Islamabad and across the country.

Additionally, the resolution condemned the recent murder of Karachi-based journalist Imtiaz Mir and called for strict measures against those involved in online trolling and harassment of media personnel.

During the session, PTI’s Barrister Gohar Ali Khan raised objections, stating: “Such resolutions should not be presented if they could create an adverse environment in the House. While we appreciate the role of the media, I have not yet met Imran Khan personally—I plan to do so tomorrow. I will look into the matter of Ejaz Ahmed myself.” He further noted that Imran Khan had previously apologized to journalists and warned that escalating tensions might worsen the situation.

Barrister Gohar also suggested that the resolution appeared aimed at revealing private conversations with Imran Khan. In response, journalists staged a walkout from the parliamentary gallery to protest the PTI founder’s alleged inappropriate conduct towards Ejaz Ahmed.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed support for the journalists’ right to protest, emphasizing: “Protests are a fundamental right of journalists. Politics and journalism are deeply intertwined.”Despite objections, the resolution was passed, reflecting lawmakers’ concern over increasing threats, harassment, and violence against journalists in Pakistan.

Earlier, credible sources told ARY News that Imran Khan had reportedly prevented his sister, Aleema Khan, from interfering in PTI’s internal affairs. Reports also indicated that two senior PTI officials from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently filed complaints with the party leader against Aleema Khan over her involvement in party matters.
