FM Ishaq Dar holds press conference in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is currently holding a press briefing in Islamabad, during which he intends to provide details about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York last week.

The meeting, which focused on efforts to end the Israeli offensive in Gaza, took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Several world leaders, including those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Indonesia, also participated.

Dar began the conference by outlining the engagements of Prime Minister Shehbaz and himself during their presence at the UNGA. He explained that the Pakistani delegation’s visit to the U.S. had two primary objectives: one related to UNGA activities and the other to collaborate with like-minded nations in alleviating the suffering in Gaza, as part of the Muslim ummah.

“The Prime Minister was very explicit about our intentions. Prior to our departure, we held consultations, and eight countries, including Pakistan, agreed to actively pursue this matter with President Trump during the visit,” Dar stated.

He mentioned that a preparatory meeting took place before the Muslim leaders’ discussion with Trump. The main goals conveyed to the U.S. president included seeking a ceasefire in Gaza, facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries without obstacles, preventing the forced displacement of Palestinians, arranging the return of displaced individuals, planning Gaza’s reconstruction, and opposing Israel’s efforts to annex parts of the West Bank.

“When these objectives were communicated to President Trump and he was asked to collaborate with us on achieving them,” Dar added, “he responded by proposing that his team would formulate a ‘practical solution’ in coordination with the foreign ministers of the eight participating Muslim countries.”
