WEB DESK: Israeli forces have intercepted a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, detaining numerous activists, notably Swedish climate advocate Greta Thunberg.
According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, all but one vessel from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) were stopped, with those onboard being transferred to an Israeli port for deportation.
The interception occurred in international waters initially about 70 nautical miles off Gaza’s coast, with some boats intercepted closer in. While Israel maintains control of the area, it does not have legal jurisdiction there. The Israeli navy reportedly ordered the ships to alter course, citing concerns over approaching an active conflict zone and breaching a naval blockade deemed lawful by Israeli authorities.
