Pakistan, Bangladesh working towards resumption of direct flights to boost trade and Tourism, NA told

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly was briefed on Friday that Pakistan and Bangladesh are actively collaborating to restore direct flight services, aiming to strengthen economic ties, promote tourism, and facilitate medical travel.

During the Question Hour, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry revealed that Bangladesh has permitted two Pakistani airlines, “Fly Jinnah” and “Air Sial,” to operate flights between the two nations. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations through various political and economic initiatives, including high-level diplomatic contacts.

Dr. Chaudhry also shared that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed for the export of 200,000 metric tons of rice, with half of this quantity already delivered. Additionally, he noted that Bangladesh has simplified business visa procedures to encourage Pakistani investments. Responding to queries, the minister mentioned that new RLNG (Re-Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas) connections are being rolled out under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives. He explained that RLNG costs would be higher than Sui Gas but lower than LNG imports.

Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights, Saba Sadiq, informed the assembly about a 24/7 toll-free helpline, 1099, offering free legal advice and support for human rights violations, including violence cases.Gul Asghar Khan, Parliamentary Secretary for Communication, provided an update on infrastructure projects, stating that work on the six-lane Sialkot-Kharian Motorway is progressing and expected to complete by 2028.The House also saw the introduction of two bills: “Netting of Financial Arrangements Bill, 2025” and “Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2025.”

Regarding gas infrastructure, Mian Khan Bugti, Parliamentary Secretary for Energy, reported that out of seven ongoing gas connection schemes in Swat and nearby regions, five have been completed, with work ongoing on the remaining two. He attributed slower progress to security issues and difficult terrain but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing all projects promptly.

He also mentioned that many projects initiated between 2013 and 2021 are already finished, and priority is being given to older schemes where citizens have paid connection fees. Approximately Rs. 2.5 billion have been allocated for these projects.Mian Bugti clarified that new gas connections can only be provided through RLNG, not conventional gas supply, and assured that all paid schemes would be finalized soon to benefit consumers. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to expediting energy projects to meet public needs effectively.
