ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to promoting lasting stability in Afghanistan while deeming terrorism in the region entirely unacceptable.
Addressing a press conference in the federal capital, Dar highlighted his recent diplomatic engagements, which included significant visits to Moscow, Brussels, and Bahrain. His first prominent meeting took place in Moscow, where Pakistan’s stance on key economic priorities was presented. Additionally, he participated in the SCO conference under the Prime Minister’s directive, focusing on energy cooperation and regional connectivity.
Dar shared details of his visit to Russia on October 17-18, where he described his meetings as highly productive. He extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Pakistan and discussed critical issues, including regional developments and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s strength amidst global challenges, stating that no major power could undermine the country.
Underscoring the importance of peace in Afghanistan for regional stability, Dar reaffirmed that Pakistan has fulfilled its commitments to the Afghan leadership and remains open to constructive dialogue with the Afghan government. He urged Afghanistan to ensure its land is not used for terrorism while highlighting that the European Union had backed Pakistan’s position on issues concerning its neighbor. Furthermore, he noted that Afghan refugees are being repatriated with respect and dignity.
During the SCO discussions, matters like the GSP Plus scheme and broader issues of cooperation were addressed. Dar also met EU officials to clarify misunderstandings, advocating for peaceful solutions in Afghanistan. Pakistan’s steadfast belief in peace as the only sustainable path forward was conveyed, along with dialogue on developmental priorities, terrorism concerns, the Indus Waters Treaty, and the Kashmir dispute.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s historic role during the Afghan Cold War, Dar remarked that the nation had worked closely with NATO forces. In this context, he held meetings with NATO’s Secretary-General at their headquarters and conducted discussions with representatives from eight EU member states. He reiterated Pakistan’s significant contributions during that era while underlining its continued aspirations for development and progress for both Pakistan and the Afghan people.
