Hong Kong arrests suspects as fire toll hits 151

WEB DESK: Authorities in Hong Kong have reported 13 arrests following the city’s deadliest fire in decades, which claimed the lives of 151 people last week. Officials fear the death toll may rise further.

The arrests were made on charges of suspected manslaughter as investigators work to determine how the devastating fire spread so quickly in a high-rise apartment complex.

Investigations are focusing on several factors, including the use of flammable polystyrene panels and bamboo scaffolding involved in renovation work at the site. Authorities also revealed that some exterior netting installed on the building’s scaffolding did not meet required fire-resistance standards.

The fire, which engulfed Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po district, is the deadliest residential building blaze worldwide since 1980.

Police have conducted searches through five of the estate’s eight high-rise blocks. Human remains have been discovered inside apartments, hallways, and staircases, with authorities continuing their efforts to complete investigations across the buildings.

Chan Tung, director of crime and security for the Hong Kong Police Force, confirmed during a press briefing that 13 individuals have been detained on manslaughter charges in connection with the disaster.

The tragedy has triggered widespread mourning across the city. Thousands of people have visited the site over a three-day period to lay flowers and pay respects, with several messages at the scene demanding accountability for the loss of life.
