WEB DESK: Hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi after a Hindu man, 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched in Bangladesh over alleged blasphemy. The incident, where Das was beaten and set on fire in Mymensingh district, has strained relations between India and Bangladesh. Authorities arrested at least 10 suspects.
The killing has escalated tensions ahead of Bangladesh’s upcoming parliamentary election, leading both nations to suspend visa services. Relations were already tense after former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India amid protests last year.
Protests on Tuesday, organized by Hindu groups, saw clashes with police near the High Commission. Protesters burned pictures of Yunus and demanded to “boycott Bangladesh.” Demonstrations also occurred in Jammu and Kashmir.
Bangladesh summoned the Indian envoy to address concerns over similar protests near its diplomatic missions, urging investigations. India’s foreign ministry stated it dispersed a small group of protesters and is committed to ensuring the safety of foreign missions.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh faces domestic unrest following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot while campaigning for February’s elections.
