Ambreen Jan appointed as PEMRA chairperson

ISLAMABAD: Ambreen Jan, former Federal Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

This decision was reached by a parliamentary committee led by Shehbaz Babar, which convened to select a suitable candidate for the position. The committee assessed qualifications and backgrounds of five shortlisted contenders before making its choice.

The potential candidates under consideration included Brigadier (Retd) Anwar Ahmed, Mateen Haider, Irfan Ashraf, Ambreen Jan, and Dr. Hamid Khan. Following thorough deliberations, the committee unanimously endorsed Ambreen Jan for the role. Her nomination has now been submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final approval.

Previously, Ambreen Jan served as Secretary of Information, bringing valuable expertise to her new role. During the committee meeting, however, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Ali Zafar was notably absent, as PTI members continue their boycott of parliamentary committees.

Established in 2002, PEMRA operates as an independent federal regulatory body tasked with managing and granting licenses for channels while fostering a structured mass media culture across print and electronic platforms. Its broader mandate includes overseeing and facilitating the functioning of all broadcast and distribution services throughout Pakistan.
