PTA collected 8.3 billion rupees in taxes from mobile device registration over six years

ISLAMABAD : The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has collected 8.3 billion rupees in taxes from mobile device registration over the past six years. During this period, a total of 100 million mobile devices were blocked in one year alone.

During the fiscal year 2023-2024, PTA blocked approximately 72 million 20 lakh mobile devices, including 8.68 lakh lost or stolen phones and 27 million duplicate or cloned IMEI devices. According to data released by PTA, since 2019, mobile device registration has generated over 8.3 billion rupees in revenue for the government.

PTA’s statistics also indicate that with the implementation of DIRBS (Device Identification Registration and Blocking System), the mobile device management system has been strengthened, effectively curbing the import of counterfeit and substandard mobile phones.

PTA states that these measures have formalized the mobile market and increased government revenue, while the MDMS regulations of 2021 have also facilitated the smuggling and manufacturing of mobile phones within the country.
