Sindh CM unveils extensive development program for Karachi

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced on Wednesday his plan to initiate a comprehensive development program for Karachi, with a budget of Rs 84.796 billion allocated for the project.

In a meeting with a delegation from the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), Shah revealed that an additional Rs 262 billion had also been approved for various developments in the city. He expressed his intention to collaborate with the FWO on implementing the proposed development projects.

Stressing the importance of quality and innovation, he emphasized that all major and key infrastructure projects in Karachi must be designed and built to match the standards of the world’s best cities. Shah outlined key initiatives included in the development plan, such as constructing a road that connects M-9 Jinnah Avenue to Shara-e-Faisal, which links the Super Highway to other major roads in Karachi.

Additionally, he shared plans for a flyover to be constructed from the airport to Star Gate, ensuring uninterrupted access between the airport and Shara-e-Faisal. He also confirmed the construction of Hawkes Bay Road, extending from the Y-junction to Machhli Chowk, and a separate road connecting Masroor Base to the Truck Stand.

Highlighting other traffic solutions, Shah mentioned a significant flyover project at Sohrab Goth, a busy gateway to Karachi, aimed at alleviating ongoing traffic congestion in the area. He disclosed that seven major projects have been allocated from the Rs 84.7 billion package.

The development plan also includes building 443 internal roads across Karachi and introducing nine projects aimed at managing traffic flow. Furthermore, 26 roads under the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will be constructed, alongside ongoing renovation work for parks, roads, and flyovers.

The chief minister directed that FWO engineers and local government teams immediately begin the design phase of these projects. He issued instructions to resolve all utility transfer and design-related challenges by February, ensuring that groundwork begins promptly by March 26.
