Ferry terminal opens at Karachi port; first ferry to Chabahar to launch this month

KARACHI: A new ferry terminal has been officially inaugurated at Karachi Port, marking the beginning of a ferry service to Chabahar, Iran, which is set to start on January 20.

The inaugural ceremony was held at Karachi’s East Wharf, where officials attended. Federal Maritime Minister Syed Ghulam Farooq Shah highlighted the significance of the new facility, stating that the ferry service presents a major opportunity for the maritime industry.

He emphasized that the ferry terminal at Karachi Port offers amenities comparable to airport facilities, including passenger immigration, customs, and departure procedures. Four Chinese operators have shown interest in managing the ferry service, aligning with the government’s vision to bolster the blue economy.

During the event, a ferry operator announced that the ticket price from Karachi to Chabahar will be PKR 50,000. The journey, scheduled to start at 5 PM, will take approximately 16 hours. The service will operate twice weekly to Chabahar.

Pakistan’s lengthy coastline currently lacks many recreational sea destinations; however, this ferry service could unlock numerous opportunities for maritime tourism and leisure activities.
