KARACHI: A massive fire erupted at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) on Friday, engulfing 20 containers and halting operations for two ships. The blaze, suspected to have started in chemical containers, spread rapidly, affecting containers with electronics, chemicals, cloth, and lithium batteries.
Rescue efforts began immediately with 13 fire tenders, later increased to 20 as the fire intensified. Port security and rescue teams worked onsite under direct supervision of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) chairman.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry ordered full utilization of resources to control the fire. Over 80% of the flames were contained, and no casualties were reported. A detailed investigation into the cause is ongoing while efforts continue to extinguish the fire completely.
