KARACHI: K-Electric has conveyed its profound grief over the tragic incident at Gul Plaza, extending condolences to those who lost loved ones and to the injured.
According to a statement issued by the power utility, part of the building collapsed and caused damage to a nearby K-Electric substation, resulting in a blackout in the surrounding area. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply to the affected locality has been temporarily halted, while nearby neighborhoods are being powered through alternate arrangements to reduce disruption.
A spokesperson confirmed that K-Electric teams are on-site and coordinating with local authorities to assist in rescue and recovery efforts. The company emphasized that public safety remains its top priority and assured that power restoration will begin once officials declare the area safe.
The incident followed a major fire that erupted at Gul Plaza, located on MA Jinnah Road, around 10 pm on Saturday. Authorities have categorized the blaze as a third-degree fire.
At least 11 people sustained critical injuries, while three fatalities have been confirmed. The deceased were identified as Aamir (30), Faraz (55), and Asif (40), with efforts ongoing to identify other victims.
Preliminary information suggests the fire originated on the mezzanine floor of the plaza, which consists of a ground floor, mezzanine, and two upper levels. The fire rapidly spread to the ground and first floors, engulfing several shops.
Fire brigade units reportedly arrived nearly an hour after the outbreak. Rescue officials stated that multiple individuals remained trapped inside the building as firefighters battled the blaze using four fire tenders and a snorkel to control the flames.
