KARACHI: Governor Kamran Tessori of Sindh has announced his intention to formally request the Karachi Mayor to facilitate the immediate transfer of shopkeepers from Gul Plaza to the Parking Plaza in Saddar. The initiative aims to support shopkeepers in resuming their business activities following the recent devastating fire.
After meeting with representatives of the business community, the Governor held a press conference where he shared a recommendation from Maulana Bashir Farooqi. The proposal suggests relocating those affected by the Gul Plaza fire to the underused Parking Plaza situated near Empress Market.
Tessori urged the Mayor to consider this humanitarian approach, emphasizing that it is meant to provide relief rather than serve political interests. He noted that the relocation process would likely take between six months to a year for the shopkeepers to fully regain operational stability.
He also highlighted the ample space available at the proposed site, mentioning that Gul Plaza spans around 100,000 square feet, while the Saddar Parking Plaza offers over 150,000 square feet of available area. “We plan to visit the Parking Plaza to assess the feasibility of the move,” the Governor added.
Furthermore, Tessori shared that the business community has proposed reconstructing Gul Plaza on a “cost-to-cost” basis, aiming for a swift rebuilding process to ensure sustainable recovery in the long term.
